Flexible oil hole drilling in crankshafts

By combining the linear axes of a modified Mach 1, twin-spindle machining centre with the rotary axis of an NC rotary table, Honsberg Lamb has devised a flexible system for machining oil holes, at different attitudes in different types of automotive crankshaft. The two horizontal spindles are arranged one above the other and pick up pairs of drills and bush guides from a tool magazine for deep hole drilling. The magazine is located above and behind the work area.
The magazine repositions itself for the next tool change while the spindles are working.
It holds usually 16 tool + guidebush assemblies (eight per work spindle).
The tool magazine swings from its upper position to a lower one for access to manually change the tooling.
Deep-hole drilling operations include pilot tooling to drill a pilot hole.
Designated the Mach 1-500 T, workspindle power is 8.5kW and feed force on the linear axes is 5kN providing enough force for twin-cutting edge deep hole drills.
Spindle spacing is 400mm.
