Vertical machining centre for pneumatics company

The ability of the Chiron FZ12W Magnum vertical machining centre to achieve average cost per part savings of up to 38 per cent has proved irresistible to Invensys Pneumatics Maxam

With super-fast tool changing and positioning times coupled with high-speed spindle speeds, the ability of the Chiron FZ12W Magnum vertical machining centre to achieve average cost per part savings of up to 38 per cent has proved irresistible to Invensys pneumatics Maxam. The Redruth (Cornwall) based manufacturer of pneumatic valves has installed a model FZ12W Magnum to not only cut costs but also improve throughput times on a range of valves for the world market. Built in Germany and available from Chiron Werke UK, the travelling column design of the FZ12W Magnum range is complemented by X, Y and Z axes travels of 550 mm by 300 mm by 425 mm, plus 190 mm to 615 mm between spindle taper and table.

With 12- or 20-tool magazines and Chiron's characteristic fast tool change time - 0.9 sec with chip-to-chip achieved within 2.4 sec - the FZ12 Magnum boasts spindle speeds up to 20,000 revs/min from its 45 kW motor, with options for a turbo spindle rated at an amazing 60,000 revs/min! Capable of milling at 250 cm3/min, drilling 36 mm diameter and M24 tapping, the FZ12 Magnum is available in two versions - model S with fixed table and model W with workpiece changer, for quick and simultaneous load/unload during machining.

The model W version has been installed by Invensys Pneumatics Maxam whose operations director, Charles Jones, explained how the machine was selected.

'In comparison with other VMCs, the Chiron Magnum's machining speeds and feeds, and potential for cost-savings, out-classed our existing capacity and all competing machines,' he said.

'After seeing demonstrations of Magnums in action at existing Chiron users Lucas Diesel Systems and British Flyreels, we decided to invest in this impressive, proven technology to achieve similar gains in productivity.'
